ZOMBIE PROM

Music by Dana P. Rowe
Book and Lyrics by John Dempsey
Based on a story by John Dempsey & Hugh Murphy

This "girl loves ghoul, rock-and-roll, Off Broadway musical" is set in the atomic 1950s at Enrico Fermi High, where the law is laid down by a zany, tyrannical principal. Pretty senior Toffee has fallen for the class bad boy. Family pressure forces her to end the romance, and he charges off on his motorcycle to the nuclear power plant. He returns undead, glowing, and determined to reclaim Toffee's heart. He still wants to graduate, but most of all he wants to take Toffee to the prom. The principal orders him to drop dead while a scandal reporter seizes on him as the freak du jour. History comes to his rescue while a tuneful selection of original songs in the style of 50s hits keeps the action rocking across the stage. Photos by Tim Poitevin and Ricardo Cook.

Rob MacGregor (Director) is ecstatic to be returning to SSR after directing the staged reading of Lady of Chaos this summer for the first annual Play Rave. He has recently returned to his native Northwest after a five-year sojourn abroad. While away, Rob developed and led the theater program at Utopya School in Istanbul, moonlighted as a sawed-off correspondent for TimeOut Magazine, traversed Asia while reporting on the tech industry and really, really missed root beer. Locally, Rob has worked with: ArtsWest, ReAct, Open Circle, Straight-Edge Theatrics, EXITheatre, Centerstage, Gaydar Productions and RipTide Theater. Brains.

Terence Alaric (Music Director) Terry is a transplant from Southern California where he was very involved in musical theater as pianist/performer and musical direction for scores of scores. Even more to his liking were the original shows composed with longtime collaborator, Linda Ballew, including Wand, War of the Currents (about Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla), and Casablanca, Casablanca: a movie musical. His first show at SecondStory Rep was as pianist for a revue in 2006, The Seven Deadly Sins; and an original children’s musical with author Pat Haines, The Dancing Princess was produced here earlier this year. He has also worked as arranger and orchestrator for new musicals by other authors as well and enjoys the problem solving aspect and attention to detail which the theater constantly offers.

Mark Chenovick (Set Design/Technical Director) has been designing, building, and painting sets since the mid-eighties. Having the fortune to begin his theatrical career under the tutelage of Don McLaughlin in his hometown of Helena Montana, Mark continued his training at the University of Washington where he was accepted into the Graduate Design Seminar his sophomore year. With subsequent degrees in Art History and Drama, Mark went on to serve as technical director/designer for multiple organizations including: Virginia Musical Theatre, Fort Peck Summer Theatre, the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, Little Theater of the Rockies, and the Norfolk Governor’s School for the Arts. As Technical Director/Production Manager of the national tour of Anything Goes (starring Gloria Loring) Mark travelled around the United States and Canada realizing that there is no place quite as wonderful as the Pacific Northwest. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, and following a brief stint as a carpenter at The Studio Theatre in Washington D.C., he moved back to Seattle. Locally he has worked behind the scenes for the Village Theatre, Seattle Musical Theatre, Redwood Theatre, and, of course, SecondStory Repertory.

Mark Chenovick (Sound Design) I began my sound design journey splicing reel-to-reel tape together in the basement of the original Penthouse Theater on the University of Washington campus but it was my brief time in the MFA program at Utah State University, where I learned the joys of digital sound design, and subsequently, became hooked on sound design for life. Having provided composed and curated underscoring and soundscaping, original and sourced sound effects, and performance amplification services for multiple theaters across the US, I have felt the most at home at SSR. Special thanks to Squolfie, ‘lil Squolf, and my extended family. You are the music of my life. #bandistoohot #sorrynotsorry

Mark Chenovick (Projection Design) has designed projections for over 100 shows in the last ten years. Prior to that he worked with CJS design, a website design and hosting company, developing custom websites for clients ranging from Draper Valley Farms to Seattle Film Group. He also co-created and ran the now defunct SeattleActor.com, a website focused on Seattle area theater, featuring audition listings, helpful articles, and show reviews. In addition to projections, Mark also designs all of the marketing materials you see at SSR including; posters, show graphics, and website. All my love to Jen. Enjoy the show!

Jim Graham (Bass) has over 30 years experience playing bass in Seattle, London and the San Francisco bay area. His playing has been heard in jazz and rock bands, film scores, concerts, CDs and cruise ship tours. He has played in over 100 different musical theater runs and after a successful run of Rocky Horror Picture Show ("it's just a jump to the left") here at SecondStory Rep last spring, Jim is delighted to return for the undead, lively and hilarious Zombie Prom.

Owen Ross (Guitar) is a producer, composer, teacher and multi-instrumentalist. Originally from Westchester County, New York, Owen grew up in a musical family deeply immersed in the east-coast traditional celtic music scene. His interests turned to jazz and classical music, which lead him to study jazz theory & music composition/technology at the University of Montana. He continued heading west after college and finally settled in sunny Seattle, where he now resides with his partner Bria.

Jordi Montes (Drums) is thrilled to once again be rocking out with SSR! She has a BA in Theatre from Trinity Western University and has been playing the drums for 10+ years. She wishes to thank Jen for the opportunity and her fiance' for her support!
