Heather Refvem (Ensemble) is a Northwest native who recently returned to the Seattle area after seven years in New York City. Doug Fahl (Molokov) last performed at SecondStory Rep in A Little Night Music. He’s worked with several companies in the past 20 years including Village Theatre (Beauty and the Beast); Seattle Repertory Theatre (Great Gatsby); ArtsWest (Shipwrecked!); StageRight (Boys Next Door); Annex Theatre (For Lorne); and Seattle Musical Theatre (Tommy and Cabaret). On screen, Doug gain some international attention, starring in comedy-horror film Zombies of Mass Destruction.

Alyssa Maas (Svetlana) is thrilled to be making her second appearance at SSR in Chess! Past roles have included Lucy in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Martha in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Rose in Secret Garden, Soupy Sue in Urinetown, Meg in Little Women, and ensemble in SSR’s Rent. Alyssa is a CWU BFA Musical Theater alumni, and while attending CWU she participated in the Varna International Summer 2011 tour in Bulgaria and Italy (The Magic Flute, Verdi’s Requiem, A Night on Broadway). She is also a choreographer for her local high school theaters, and a recently licensed zumba instructor. Alyssa would like to thank Mom, Nic, her family and friends for all their love and support, the entire cast and production team of Chess for this amazing experience, and everyone at SSR! Nick Watson (Anatoly) is a senior at Cornish College of the Arts where he just got done playing Archie in The Secret Garden. This is his second production at SecondStory, last year he was John Brooke in Little Women, and he is so excited to be working here again on this amazing show! He hopes you enjoy the show as much as he does!

Matthew Dela Cruz (Ensemble) is making his SSR debut! A recent graduate of Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York City, he is excited to be back in his hometown after being away for two years. Favorite roles include Ron Taylor in BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL, Dennis in ALL SHOOK UP and The Fire Chief in THE BALD SOPRANO. Much love to his family and friends for their immense support :)

Casey Raiha (Freddie) is proud to be returning to SSR with this unique musical, having played J. Pierrepont Finch in last year's production of How To Succeed... Local Credits include: RENT at 5th Avenue Theatre, Captain Walker in The Who's Tommy (SMT), Charlie Davenport in Annie Get Your Gun (Village Theatre), Brad Majors in The Rocky Horror Show, and Christian Grey in Cuff Me: The Unauthorized Musical Parody of 50 Shades of Grey. He dedicates this show to his parents.

Brock Madden (Arbiter) is ecstatic to be kicking off SecondStory Repertory's 16th season with this complex and underappreciated musical. You might've last seen him as Francis in SSR's La Cage Aux Folles last spring. Brock dedicates this performance to his spirit animal, the ever-elusive Squolf.

Sebastian Floyd Hulburt (Chorus/Viigand) is just so happy to be returning to the SSR stage. It's really the best. Some favorite past credits include but are not limited to Chess (Anatoly), Sweeney Todd (Sweeney), and Romeo & Juliet (Tybalt). When not performing he enjoys long walks down the beach, the rule of three, and oxford commas. Thanks to Metro for existing and you for the same reason. Enjoy the show!

Adrienne MacIain (Florence) has been in love with Chess since junior high school, and Florence is one of three roles she absolutely must play before she dies (the other two, in case you're curious, are Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors and The Witch in Into the Woods). So she's one step closer to a peaceful death and couldn't be happier about it. Regulars here at SSR may recall her as Germaine from Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Little Becky Two-Shoes from Urinetown, and/or Gertrude from The Underpants. She'd like to thank Cydian and Renee for making her participation possible, and her mother Elizabeth for believing in her talent and encouraging her to follow her dreams. Look ma: my dream came true!

Meagan Castillo (Ensemble) is pleased to be a part of SecondStory Repertory's production of “Chess”. Previous SSR appearances include “Rumpelstiltskin” and “The Frog Prince” with Theater for Young Audiences, and the mainstage production “Amadeus”. Other favorite roles include the Baker's Wife, Into the Woods (Ovation! Bainbridge), Frances, No Sex Please, We're British! (Driftwood Players), Ado Annie, Oklahoma! (Kitsap Forest Theater) and Elaine Harper, Arsenic and Old Lace (Renton and Bellevue Civic Theaters). Meagan is the mother of three boys, as well as a full time college student completing nursing prerequisites. As usual, love and thanks go out to her amazingly patient and supportive husband, Bryan.

Isaiah Crowson (Walter) is wicked excited to be appearing on the SecondStory Rep stage once again! Isaiah has performed all over the Pacific Northwest. Even appearing in the pilot episode for Untethered. You may have seen him in such roles as Bud/ Pan in Bat Boy the Musical (SecondStory Rep), Jake in Evil Dead! (Artswest), Howard in Moon Over Buffalo (SSR), Richard in Private Lives (SSR), Mitch in Tuesdays with Morrie (The Merc Playhouse), Smudge in Forever Plaid (SSR) and Riff Raff in The Rocky Horror Show (SSR) to name a few. Isaiah is also the founder and Artistic Director of BrainCog Productions.

Britt Boyd (Ensemble) is delighted to be a part of an SSR Mainstage production again, having last appeared as a Quartet member in A Little Night Music. Favorite local credits include The Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods (Seattle Musical Theatre), Mrs. Armstrong in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (Seattle Public Theatre) and Martha in The Secret Garden (Kitsap Forest Theater). She has also performed locally with Village Theatre, ACT, Living Voices, Theater Schmeater and STAGEright. By day, Britt introduces young minds to theater as a teaching artist!

MEET THE DANCERS

Candace Larson (Dancer) is a dance instructor at Applause Studio in Mill Creek and a lifetime dance student. She has choreographed musicals including Crazy for You, Once on This Island, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Candace most recently played Baker's Wife in Into the Woods (Aurora Theatre Company), Mary Jane in Big River (Grand Theatre), and Diana in Lend Me a Tenor (Westminster College). Candace sends her love and thanks to her husband Andy for encouraging her to participate in Chess!

Rebecca Sullivan (Dancer) Rebecca began dancing in her hometown of Vancouver, WA at the age of seven. While completing her Bachelor's in Dance at Chapman Univeristy, she had many opportunities to perform and particularly loved participating in the annual musical theater productions. Rebecca has been a proud member of Chimera Dance Theater since 2006. She is excited to join the cast of Chess and would like to thank her family and friends for all of their love and support.

Jennifer Biladeau (Dancer) was born in Alabama and has traversed the United States ever since, making sure to stop at every community theater. She began her theater training by learning the ropes at her dad’s side as he directed and performed in plays and musicals in North Carolina, Ohio, and Idaho. From her theater training came a desire to dance. She began her formal training under Sarah Arnold at Capitol City Ballet Center in Boise, Idaho. She became enrolled at the University of Idaho (as a dance major) under the tutelage of Greg Halloran, Mary Heller, Melissa Schulte, and Mia Song Seshiki. While at the U of I, Jennifer was able to work with guest choreographers such as Christopher Morgen of City Dance and Sherry Zunker of Aylet Creative and River North Chicago. Jennifer transferred to the University of Washington in 2010 to complete her Bachelor of Arts major in dance: creative studies. She is thrilled to be in the arts-centric city of Seattle, and is looking forward to a bright future on its stages.

MEET THE BAND

Tyler Rath (Bass) graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a degree in music technology and is a freelance bassist and instructor with a background in classical, rock, jazz, and funk genres. He currently is working in the recording business and is pursuing a masters degree in teaching.

Zac Stowell (Drums) smacks the thundertubs around town quite regularly for companies such as Village Theatre, Balagan, Seattle Children's Theater, and Seattle Musical Theater. He is also part of seattle's premier wedding band, Casual Bow Tie! (CasualBowTie.com)

Aimee Hong (Keyboard) is making her pit debut at SecondStory playing some sweet, sweet keyboard. She has enjoyed working with BAT, Bellevue College, the Seattle Opera, and the Seattle Symphony. Love to Strongbad. Enjoy!

MET THE PRODUCTION TEAM

Danny Miller (Director) is excited to be working with such a talented and fun cast and crew as SecondStory celebrates the beginning of its 16th season. He last directed Season 15's opening show, The Mystery of Irma Vep. Danny has been involved with SecondStory since season 4, and also proudly serves as the President of the Board.

Joshua Zimmerman (Music Director/Conductor/Keyboard/Guitar) is thrilled to Music Direct his first production for SSR. An avid instructor, performer, and Music Director, he is the recipient of the "Gypsy Rose Lee" award for "outstanding musical direction of a non-equity musical" for his work on Hairspray for Seattle Musical Theatre, chosen by the Seattle Theater Writers in 2012. Recent productions include Music Direction/Keyboard/Conductor for Little Women for ArtsWest, Secret Garden for Cornish College of the Arts, and Urinetown for Renton Civic Theatre. He thanks Mark, Jen, and Christina for their incredible support, Danny for his amazing vision and creativity, and this wonderful cast, crew, and orchestra for sharing their time, talents, and devotion. He thanks you, the patron, for continuing to support local performance art. Special thanks to Shelly, Raphael, and Isaiah for making all of this possible.

Jocelyne Fowler (Costume Designer) has designed for Seattle Shakespeare Company (Richard II), Book-It Repertory Theatre (Frankenstein, Anna Karenina, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet), Wooden O (Two Gentlemen of Verona, Henry V and The Tempest), Seattle Musical Theatre (Young Frankenstein and Legally Blonde), Youth Theatre Northwest (Spring Awakening, Shrek: The Musical, Little Women, and The Sound of Music), Harlequin Productions (Jesus Christ Superstar), and other local theatres. Upcoming work can be seen in Dead Man’s Cell Phone at Bellevue College, Clybourne Park at Harlequin Productions and Pride and Prejudice with Book-It Repertory Theatre.

Jen Chenovick (Light Design) Jen's theatrical career began in 2002 when she was asked to assistant stage manage The Importance of Being Ernest right here at SSR. Following her passion for theater Jen moved to Hollywood in 2005 where she stage managed for The Blank Theatre including the oddly satisfying Lobster Alice starring Noah Wylie and Nicholas Brendon. While in California, she also worked with Syzygy Theatre Group and the World Premiere of Tender, Abi Morgan’s trenchant drama of the human hunger for connection. Jen moved back to Redmond in 2007 and jumped right back into her work with SSR. During her eighteen plus years at SSR Jen has worn many hats, from stage manager to production manager to managing director and now light design. Special thanks to my parents, they’re pretty cool.

Mark Chenovick (Set Design/Technical Director) has been designing, building, and painting sets since the mid-eighties. Having the fortune to begin his theatrical career under the tutelage of Don McLaughlin in his hometown of Helena Montana, Mark continued his training at the University of Washington where he was accepted into the Graduate Design Seminar his sophomore year. With subsequent degrees in Art History and Drama, Mark went on to serve as technical director/designer for multiple organizations including: Virginia Musical Theatre, Fort Peck Summer Theatre, the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, Little Theater of the Rockies, and the Norfolk Governor’s School for the Arts. As Technical Director/Production Manager of the national tour of Anything Goes (starring Gloria Loring) Mark travelled around the United States and Canada realizing that there is no place quite as wonderful as the Pacific Northwest. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, and following a brief stint as a carpenter at The Studio Theatre in Washington D.C., he moved back to Seattle. Locally he has worked behind the scenes for the Village Theatre, Seattle Musical Theatre, Redwood Theatre, and, of course, SecondStory Repertory.


Mark Chenovick (Sound Design) I began my sound design journey splicing reel-to-reel tape together in the basement of the original Penthouse Theater on the University of Washington campus but it was my brief time in the MFA program at Utah State University, where I learned the joys of digital sound design, and subsequently, became hooked on sound design for life. Having provided composed and curated underscoring and soundscaping, original and sourced sound effects, and performance amplification services for multiple theaters across the US, I have felt the most at home at SSR. Mark Chenovick (Projection Design) has designed projections for over 100 shows in the last ten years. Prior to that he worked with CJS design, a website design and hosting company, developing custom websites for clients ranging from Draper Valley Farms to Seattle Film Group. He also co-created and ran the now defunct SeattleActor.com, a website focused on Seattle area theater, featuring audition listings, helpful articles, and show reviews. In addition to projections, Mark also designs all of the marketing materials you see at SSR including; posters, show graphics, and website. All my love to Jen. Enjoy the show!
